"Don't tell me I'm insane, I'm not insane." The 18 year-old, Janet, has fire in her eyes as she screams at the group.

Doctor Deanna Ryan shuffles her papers nervously and clicks her ballpoint pen. "No one was even addressing you, young lady."

Jimmy sits across the room from Janet and leers at her; she finally finishes brooding and turns her head, in time to catch the look. "What do you want?"

Jimmy continues to stare at her, his hormones clearly evident in his smile. "I want to know what it's like."

At age 38 James Thompson has it all, a successful financial consulting business, a big, beautiful house, a gorgeous wife and two young sons. Everything comes easily for James, but lately he has been having the same dream every night. The characters, all complete and fully formed, interject themselves into his subconscious whenever he sleeps, and the story is on-going in his mind. James begins hypnotherapy to better understand the meaning of his recurring dreams, and the therapist informs him that there is some sort of a mental block at age 29.

A character named Jimmy Thomas is central to the puzzle, along with an older, married woman named Debra, and a young, schizophrenic teen named Janet. The trio, along with a handful of others, play key parts in the dream. Also involved in the dream is a psychiatrist named Deanna, who may or may not be real, and may or may not be entirely responsible for the problem.

James, with the help of his wife and his young assistant, starts his own investigation into the meaning of his strange dreams, only to uncover a procedure too important to be made public. As loved ones begin to disappear, only to return with their memories selectively wiped clean. James realizes that this is far bigger than he ever imagined. When confronted by the organization, James must decide whether it is more important to find out the truth, or to keep his safe comfortable life.
